GOLDEN KNIGHTS CLOSE SEASON WITH HEARTBREAKING DOUBLE-OVERTIME SETBACK

ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose had its season draw to a close in heartbreaking fashion today as visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Michael's scored the game-winner just past the midway point of the second overtime session to chalk up a 9-8 victory.

The Golden Knights (3-13/1-10 NE-10) scored twice in the final 2:06 of regulation to force overtime and then engineered seven shots within a 1:48 span after winning the opening face-off of the second OT. However, the Purple Knights (5-9/3-8 NE-10) recovered a groundball and made a successful clear that allowed senior attack Mark Yetter to fire home the game-winner.

Saint Michael's manufactured a 49-43 shot advantage although the Saint Rose duo of freshman Nicolas Johnson and sophomore Lucas Frese won 16-of-22 face offs collectively to get the Golden Knights offense rolling on a consistent basis.

Sophomore attack Matt Graham scored three goals including his school record 34th of the season to surpass the previous mark of 33 that Brett McAuliffe set in the program's inaugural 2012 campaign. Also, freshman goalie Liam Guiton tied his season-high with 16 saves, senior midfielder Jon Munroe gathered in nine groundballs and senior defenseman Robert Reyes caused four Purple Knights miscues.

Senior midfielder Mike Balla, sophomore midfielder Connor Moore, sophomore attack Evan Doherty, junior attack Tyler Mello and Munroe accounted for the remaining five Saint Rose strikes.

Saint Michael's got out to a fast start by scoring three times in the opening five minutes, before the Golden Knights registered five of the game's next six goals within an 11 minute time frame that spanned the first and second quarters.

Balla struck unassisted with 6:55 left in the first to tie it 3-3, Graham finished a Moore feed in a man-up situation with 13:23 to go in the second to make it 5-4 Saint Rose, and then Moore struck himself with 5:37 left until intermission to make it a 6-5 affair. The Purple Knights then got one back to deadlock the game for the fourth time at the break.

Saint Michael's scored the lone goal of the third quarter and added what appeared to be an insurance marker midway through the fourth. However, Balla set up Mello and Graham scored unassisted to paint the scene for a wild finish.

Prior to the game, midfielders Joseph O'Hagan, Cameron Fisher, Balla and Munroe, along with defensemen Trey Jackson, Colin Stewart and Reyes, and long stick midfielder Bobby Primo were recognized for their contributions to the program as part of Senior Day festivities.
