WELL ROUNDED EFFORT PROPELS GOLDEN KNIGHTS PAST AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

ALBANY–Some outstanding pitching coupled with timely hitting propelled The College of Saint Rose to today's 2-1 victory against Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division rival American International. The Golden Knights (16-13/10-4 NE-10) have now won seven of their last nine and are 8-3 at home.

Senior right-hander Phillip Zdanowski wove a two-hit, 8.0 inning masterpiece; junior third baseman Alex Chandler provided the game-winning RBI and junior shortstop Tyler Ungerland continued his torrid hitting to spearhead the Saint Rose effort.

Zdanowski surrendered a run on a pair of hits in the first and then proceeded to toss 7.0 innings of no-hit ball before giving way to senior southpaw Joe Pokrentowski who set down the Yellow Jackets (10-30/5-19 NE-10) number three, four and five hitters in order in the ninth to procure his seventh save this spring.

Zdanowski fanned four and at one point retired 16 of 18 American International batters to run his record to 2-2. Ungerland wound up 3-for-4 while Chandler finished 2-for-4.

The Golden Knights tied the game in the fourth when Ungerland and Chandler led off with back-to-back doubles. They then stranded the potential go-ahead run in both the sixth and seventh, before Ungerland belted a one-out base hit in the eighth, advanced to second on a balk and then came around with the winning run via Chandler's double that sliced just inside the left field line.

Ungerland raised his NE-10 leading batting average another 13 points to .439 (43-for-98). He has now hit in eight straight games at a .560 (14-for-25) clip. Also, senior left fielder Nick Venier has reached base in 19 consecutive contests. As a team, the Golden Knights are 9-1 when leading after seven innings and the pitching staff has held opposing hitters to a .224 batting average throughout the past 21 games during which they have gone 16-5.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose will make up Tuesday's postponed Upstate Challenge rival game at Le Moyne on Friday. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm. The Golden Knights then return home for a three-game weekend series with Adelphi. Meanwhile, American International has a three-game weekend set at Southern Connecticut State in New Haven.
