SAINT ROSE SPLITS AT AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL


SPRINGFIELD, Mass.-The College of Saint Rose fell 5-2 before taking the late game, 6-5, in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at American International on Tuesday.
 
In the opener, Saint Rose (11-25/5-14 NE-10) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning on a fielder's choice from sophomore second baseman Taylor Solomon. Next, the Yellow Jackets (16-19/11-13 NE-10) answered with a run in the home half of the inning and put three runs on the board in the fifth to take control of the contest.
 
Freshman first baseman Briana Bowen went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and run scored. Junior left fielder Carly Wood hit 1-for-2 with two walks and a steal.
 
The teams traded runs in the first inning of game two and AIC took a 3-1 lead after three. Saint Rose then started the top of the fourth with four consecutive hits including RBI singles from freshman catcher Victoria Hallett and senior right fielder Danielle Dayton to tie the game at 3-3.
 
The Golden Knights plated three runs in the fifth after freshman third baseman Elizabeth Jones singled home a run and scored on the play following two errors by AIC.
 
Freshman right-hander Roma Mazzariello then kept the Yellow Jackets in check to secure the victory. She struck out five in a complete game effort. Wood hit her sixth home run of the season, while Jones went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
 
Looking ahead, Saint Rose hosts New Haven in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, April 22 at Cathy Haker Field. The Golden Knights will then host Senior Day on Saturday in a 12 p.m. matchup with the Chargers.
