GOLDEN KNIGHTS KEEP ROLLING

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose put itself in control early to upend host Upstate Challenge rival Le Moyne 11-3 today in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division showdown. The Golden Knights (12-11/8-2 NE-10) have now won 12 of their last 15 after opening the year 0-8.

Saint Rose took immediate control by jumping out to a 4-0 lead after two and then doubling that with four more in the fifth. The Golden Knights then added three more in the eighth.

Each starter in the Saint Rose lineup had at least one hit including junior shortstop Tyler Ungerland who went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the second. Senior catcher Joe DeLuca also finished 2-for-4 and drove in four runs while sophomore right fielder Sean Maki wound up 2-for-4 as well with an RBI and a run scored.

On the mound, senior right-hander Nick Cioffi was impressive on the way to running his record to 4-0 on the year. He did not allow an earned run and gave up five hits while fanning 11 and walking only one throughout 7.0 innings of work. He also stranded runners in scoring position in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings.

The Golden Knights came out swinging as DeLuca belted an RBI single in the first to put Saint Rose up 1-0. Senior left fielder Nick Venier then made it 2-0 in the second with an RBI base hit that brought around senior center fielder Derek Reed. Ungerland then followed with his two-run blast over the left field fence.

DeLuca did most of the damage in the fifth behind a two-run single to center. An RBI ground out, a fielder's choice and a run scoring base hit off the bat of junior third baseman Alex Chandler accounted for the three runs in the eighth.

For Le Moyne, senior shortstop Dylan Swetman and junior third baseman Gabe Levanti had two hits apiece.

Ungerland has now hit safely in 20 of the team's 23 contests this spring and is batting a league-leading .405 (32-for-79). He also has 10 multi-hit games to his credit. DeLuca has hit seven straight and Ungerland has done so in five straight. The Golden Knights are 5-1 in one-run games and are 7-0 when leading after seven innings throughout their current 15 game streak. Furthermore, the pitching staff has struck out 138, while walking 49, in 135.0 innings of work.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose is back home tomorrow for a 3:30 pm non-league twin-bill versus St. Joseph, VT. Both squads then have three-game divisional series this weekend. The Golden Knights travel to Pleasantville to visit Pace University, while the Dolphins will host American International.
