SAINT ROSE TAKES SERIES FROM SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE WITH TODAY'S 6-3 TRIUMPH

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose kept up its winning ways by upending Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division rival Southern Connecticut State 6-3 today at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Golden Knights (11-11/7-2 NE-10) have now won 11 of their last 14 after opening the year 0-8.

Saint Rose scored four times in the second to go up 4-1 and then tacked on two more in the sixth before the Owls (9-20/2-11 NE-10) got a pair back in the eighth.

The first three Golden Knights reached in the second to set the stage for junior second baseman Mike Flynn who belted an RBI base hit to right. Two batters later, sophomore right fielder Sean Maki worked a walk to make it 2-1 Saint Rose. Senior center fielder Derek Reed then made it 3-1 with a sacrifice fly and senior left fielder Nick Venier singled to center that brought around Flynn with the fourth run.

The Golden Knights then put themselves in the driver's seat with two more in the sixth. Junior catcher Joe DeLuca smacked a leadoff double to left and scored when sophomore designated hitter Alec Caprarella followed with a base hit through the right side. Caprarella came around three batters later on a Maki sac fly.

Southern Connecticut State made it interesting by pushing across two runs in the eighth. However, junior right-hander Carmine Vricciariello came out of the bullpen to halt the rally. After walking his first batter to load the bases, Vricciariello fanned the next hitter on three pitches and induced a fly ball to left to get out of the jam.

Vricciariello then worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth to pick up the save that preserved the win for sophomore right-hander Tyler Childrose. Childrose settled in nicely after walking the first two batters of the game. He proceeded to fan nine while allowing three runs on six hits throughout 7.1 innings of work.

DeLuca finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while Flynn and Caprarella each wound up with two hits to propel the Saint Rose offense.

Throughout their current 14 game streak, the Golden Knights are 5-1 in one-run games and are 7-0 when leading after seven innings. Furthermore, the pitching staff has struck out 125, while walking 48, in 126.0 innings of work.

Looking ahead, both squads return to the diamond for intra-division games Tuesday. The Golden Knights travel to Upstate Challenge rival Le Moyne for a 3:00 pm meeting while the Owls have a 3:30 pm home date with Adelphi.
