GOLDEN KNIGHTS SALVAGE SPLIT WITH WALKOFF OVER SCSU

ALBANY-Junior third baseman Alex Chandler delivered a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday, as The College of Saint Rose defeated Southern Connecticut State 6-5 in the nightcap following a 6-4 loss in the opener of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on a gorgeous day at Bob Bellizzi Field.

In game one, Saint Rose (10-11/6-2 NE-10) scored three runs in the home half of the first inning, but surrendered two Southern Connecticut (9-20-1/2-6 NE-10) runs in three of the next four innings. The Golden Knights were then kept off the board until the bottom of ninth when they had runners on second and third with no outs, trailing 6-3. Senior center fielder Derek Reed picked up a sacrifice fly to draw within two of the lead, but Saint Rose was unable to force extras.

Reed finished 2-for-4 while junior catcher Joe DeLuca went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore righty Dominic Razzano struck out four in 3.1 scoreless innings out of the pen.

The Golden Knights took a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning in the late game before allowing the Owls to score one run in the sixth, one in the seventh, and three in the ninth to tie things up at 5-5.

Freshman right fielder Dakota DeJordy led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk. Next, Reed laid down a sacrifice bunt to move DeJordy to second. Senior left fielder Nick Venier then beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners with one out. The league's leading hitter at .397, junior shortstop Tyler Ungerland was intentionally walked before Chandler smoked a pitch through the left side with the infield in to win the game.

Senior right hander Phillip Zdanowski struck out six and allowed two runs in 7.1 innings of work. Venier went 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored, while Unglerland finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Up next, the Golden Knights take on Southern Connecticut in the rubber match of the weekend series on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Bob Bellizzi Field.
