GOLDEN KNIGHTS SPLIT WITH PACE AND SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose bounced back after visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University scored twice in the seventh inning of today's first game to upend the Setters 3-2. In the process, the Golden Knights (10-20/5-9) snapped their guests four-game win streak.

However, Southern Connecticut State scored six runs on only five hits to upend Saint Rose 6-3 in the finale of a rare split-team billing.

In the opener, sophomore second baseman Taylor Solomon hit a one-out bases loaded sacrifice fly to center that brought across senior catcher Zoe Dubois who easily beat the throw to score the winning run.

DuBois finished 2-for-2 with a triple and scored all three runs, while Solomon reached base twice and wound up with a pair of RBI. Freshman first baseman Annie Carberry finished 3-for-4 to lead Pace (19-11/12-4 NE-10).

Saint Rose went up 1-0 in the third when freshman right fielder Grace Jacobs hit a base hit that brought in Dubois who tripled to right one batter earlier. The Golden Knights then made it 2-0 in the fifth when Solomon scored Dubois from second with a single.

However, Pace strung together four hits in the seventh to set the stage for the exciting finish.

In the nightcap, the Owls (9-25/2-14 NE-10) used some aggressive base running and took advantage of a pair of errors to push across five runs in the third after Saint Rose took a 1-0 lead in its half on an RBI double by sophomore third baseman Jadyn Costello.

The Golden Knights then made it a 5-3 ballgame in the sixth when Dubois scored Costello with a base hit to center and senior shortstop Daniel Brusca touched home via a Jacobs sacrifice fly. However, Saint Rose left the bases fill and Southern Connecticut State added what proved to be a perfunctory run in its portion of sixth.

Sophomore designated player Samantha Groskritz reached base three times with a pair of hits and a walk, and senior right-hander Kelsey Cockrill fanned 12 over the distance to lead the Owls.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose and Pace wrap up their three-game series with a 12:00 pm doubleheader tomorrow. On Monday, the Golden Knights host Le Moyne in an Upstate Challenge 4:00 pm doubleheader. Meanwhile, Southern Connecticut State opens up a three-game weekend series at Le Moyne with a 12:00 pm twin-bill tomorrow.

Prior to today's games, the College dedicate the home team bullpen in loving memory of John David Wilmott, the father of junior catcher Seana Wilmott. John believed in the power of athletic competition to define the human spirit, to unite even the fiercest opponents and to teach essential life lessons to every contestant willing to learn them. He lived too short a life, but never took himself out of the game.
