GOLDEN KNIGHTS SCORE THREE IN THE NINTH TO UPEND AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL 9-6

SPRINGFIELD, MA–The College of Saint Rose scored three times in the ninth inning to snap a 6-6 tie on the way to a 9-6 victory today at Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division rival American International.

Senior left fielder Nick Venier and junior catcher Joe DeLuca sandwiched run-scoring doubles around an intentional walk to put the Golden Knights (9-10/5-1 NE-10) up 8-6 and then junior third baseman Alex Chandler brought across sophomore designated hitter Alec Caprarella with a sacrifice fly.

Senior left-hander Joe Pokrentowski took the bump for the ninth and struck out the Yellow Jackets (6-26/1-16 NE-10) side in order looking to chalk up his sixth save this spring.

Venier finished 4-for-5 with three RBI behind a double and a triple to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Meanwhile, senior center fielder Derek Reed finished 4-for-5 as well with three runs scored to run his hit streak to seven straight.

Furthermore, junior shortstop Tyler Ungerland finished 2-for-3 and reached base five times to boost his league-leading batting average to .424 (28-for-66) on the year. Junior second baseman Mike Flynn also had a pair of singles as Saint Rose pounded out a season-high 15 hits.

On the mound, junior right-hander Carmine Vricciariello hit the first batter he faced to lead off the eighth. He regrouped to record a strikeout before inducing a double play that kept the game deadlocked at 6-6.

The Golden Knights, who have now won six of their last seven including four straight, went up 2-0 in the first on a Venier RBI triple and an Ungerland run scoring base hit. They then scored three times in the fifth to make it a 5-2 ballgame behind a Venier RBI double and another double by Ungerland that brought across two more runs.

After American International answered with three runs in the home half, Reed homered over the left field fence to open up the seventh to make it 6-5 Saint Rose. However, American International tied the game for the third time by scoring a run itself in the bottom of the frame.

For the Yellow Jackets, senior left fielder Tyler Geffert went 2-for-4 and did all of the damage in the fifth with a three-run shot to left.

Looking ahead, both squads are looking at three-game NE-10 intra-division weekend series that run with 12:00 pm Saturday doubleheaders and a Sunday single game. The Golden Knights will host Southern Connecticut State, while the Yellow Jackets to travel to Long Island to take on Adelphi.
