GOLDEN KNIGHTS POUND OUT 14 HITS TO TAKE NE-10 OPENER

SPRINGFIELD, MA–The College of Saint Rose pounded out 14 hits and survived a six-run ninth inning by host American International to win its 2016 Northeast-10 Conference opener 14-9 today.

Senior center fielder Derek Reed and sophomore designated hitter Alec Caprarella went 7-for-10 collectively and drove in four runs apiece for the Golden Knights (5-9/1-0 NE-10) who have now won five of their last six. Also, junior shortstop Tyler Ungerland finished 2-for-5 with three RBI to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. Junior catcher Joe DeLuca reached base four times.

On the mound, senior right-hander Nick Cioffi allowed three runs on five hits and fanned eight throughout 6.0 innings of work to improve to 3-0 this spring. Also, sophomore right-hander Tyler Childrose tossed 2.0 innings of one-hit ball out of the bullpen.

Saint Rose rallied from a 3-0 deficit by pushing across six runs in the fourth. Caprarella did most of the damage with a two-run base hit through the left side of the infield. The Golden Knights then tacked on five more in the seventh when Caprarella struck with a two-run single up the middle and Reed brought across three more with a triple to the right-center field gap.

In the eighth, DeLuca drove a one out double down the left field line and came around two batters later when sophomore first baseman Chris Introcaso singled to right. In the ninth, Ungerland belted a two-run shot over the left-center field fence for his third round-tripper of the year.

For the Yellow Jackets (6-16/1-6 NE-10), junior first baseman Chris Starcun went 3-for-4 with a second inning solo home run.

Looking ahead, both squads have home conference 12:00 pm doubleheaders on tap for Saturday. Saint Rose will host Merrimack, while American International will face third-ranked Franklin Pierce.
