STELLAR SAINT ROSE PITCHING HIGHLIGHTS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER

ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose did not allow an earned run on Saturday and split a doubleheader with Chestnut Hill with a 1-0 loss in the opener and a 2-1 victory in the afternoon in non-league action at Bob Bellizzi Field.

In the morning game, Saint Rose (4-9) outhit Chestnut Hill (11-12), 5-2, but could not get on the board and allowed a run on a groundout in the third that proved to be the game-winner.

Senior right hander Phillip Zdanowski went 7.0 innings and allowed just two hits and one unearned run to go along with six punch-outs. Out of the pen, sophomore righty Tyler Childrose struck out four in 2.0 clean innings. Junior shortstop Tyler Ungerland went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.

The second game of the day was slated for seven innings, and saw another pitching duel that kept both teams without a run until the fifth when the Griffins scored on an errant throw.

The Saint Rose bats came through in the sixth inning sparked by a leadoff single from junior second baseman Mike Flynn. A sacrifice bunt from freshman left fielder Dakota DeJordy moved Flynn into scoring position, and senior center fielder Derek Reed followed with a game-tying RBI single to right center.

Next, Reed moved up to second base on a wild pitch, and sophomore third baseman Alec Caprarella delivered a clutch single that sliced into center field to put the Golden Knights ahead 2-1. Senior left hander Joe Pokrentowski entered from the pen with one out in the seventh. He picked off an inherited runner at first and forced a fly ball to close out the game and pick up his third save of the season.

Senior right hander Ryan McGrath earned his second win of the year after allowing no earned runs in 6.1 innings of work and striking out seven.

Up next, Saint Rose kicks off Northeast-10 Conference play with a 3:30 p.m. contest at American International on Wednesday, March 30 in Springfield, Mass.
