GOLDEN KNIGHTS WIN HOME OPENER

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose took advantage of some timely hitting and superlative pitching to win its 2016 home opener with today's 4-3 victory versus Chestnut Hill at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

Senior right-hander Nick Cioffi scattered four hits and did not allow an earned run throughout 6.0 innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the year while junior shortstop Tyler Ungerland belted a two-run homer over the right field fence to propel the Golden Knights (3-8) to their third straight win.

Furthermore, junior catcher Tom Moore mowed down a trio of Chestnut Hill (10-11) base runners and senior southpaw Joe Pokrentowski fanned a pair during the final 1.1 frames to chalk up his second save of the young season. Additionally, senior second baseman Mike Flynn and junior first baseman Joe DeLuca had two hits apiece.

The Griffins struck first when they pushed across an unearned run in the top of third. However, Saint Rose responded with three in the home half. Moore came across on an RBI groundout by freshman left fielder Dakota DeJordy and Ungerland followed with his second round tripper this spring.

The Golden Knights then made it 4-1 an inning later when Moore singled home sophomore right fielder Sean Maki.

However, Chestnut Hill made it interesting in the eighth when freshman third baseman Zach Szumigala drove a two-run double to the right-center field gap. Pokrentowski shut the door though by coming on and recording a strikeout.

Szumigala and catcher junior catcher Christopher Demey had two hits each to pace the Chestnut Hill attack.

For Saint Rose, Cioffi has now allowed only one earned run throughout his last three appearances that cover 21.0 innings work while Ungerland has hit safely in 10 straigt games.

Looking ahead, these two teams are scheduled to wrap up their weekend series with an 11:00 am doubleheader tomorrow at Bellizzi Field.
