GOLDEN KNIGHTS FALL TO NEW HAVEN, 64-61


ALBANY- Freshman forward Karissa Birthwright scored a game-high 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting Saturday, but The College of Saint Rose dropped a 64-61 affair to New Haven in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Western Avenue.
 
Saint Rose (14-9/8-8 NE-10) led 15-10 after the opening frame, but trailed at halftime, 27-26. New Haven (11-11/7-9 NE-10) then held the Golden Knights without a field goal over the final five minutes of the game. Freshman guard Ashley Vanderwall took a well-defended attempt from three-point range at the buzzer, but the shot was off target.
 
The Chargers closed the game on a 24-13 run after the Golden Knights had their biggest lead of the day, 48-40, with 1:58 to go in the third period.
 
Senior guard Keyontae Williams recorded 13 points, while junior forward Staci Barrett totaled 12 points and five rebounds. Junior guard Taylor Nazon tallied 10 points and five assists. Sophomore guard Britani Stowe  filled up the stat sheet with four points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
 
For New Haven, senior guard Briana Bradford, the league's second-leading scorer, recorded 16 points on 6-for-18 shooting, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
 
Saint Rose also participated in the national Pink Zone initiative and Coaches vs. Cancer effort today. To that end, all gate receipts from today's doubleheader have been earmarked for Camp Bravehearts and the annual John Pesce Memorial Award.
 
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are on the road Wednesday to take on Adelphi in the first half of a league doubleheader on Long Island. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm. Meanwhile, the Chargers are off until next Saturday when they will host none other than the Panthers at 3:30 pm. Also, next Saturday's home NE-10 doubleheader versus Southern Connecticut State will be featured on national television as part of the American Sports Network's Division II Showcase. The women's game will get underway at 2:00 pm, while the men's contest will tip-off at 4:00 pm to accommodate the television broadcasts. The games will also be streamed live on www.ncaa.com.
