GOLDEN KNIGHTS SUFFER 72-62 SETBACK AT SURGING ADELPHI

GARDEN CITY, NY-Host Adelphi manufactured 21 turnovers by The College of Saint Rose into 19 points to upend the Golden Knights 72-62 in Northeast-10 Conference action this evening. In the process, the Panthers (17-8/10-7 NE-10) ran their win streak to four games.

Freshman forward Karissa Birthwright produced double-figures in scoring for the sixth time in the last seven outings and junior forward Staci Barrett posted her fifth "double-double" of the year to lead Saint Rose (14-10/8-9 NE-10).

Birthwright finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Barrett had 14 points and a like number boards. Senior guard Keyontae Williams tossed in 15 points, while junior guard Taylor Nazon added 11.

The Golden Knights were within striking distance throughout the first three periods, before Adelphi used an early fourth period surge to put itself in control.

Saint Rose trailed by six after the first, by four at intermission, and by seven following the third. However, the Panthers opened the final stanza with an 8-2 spurt that transformed a 50-43 lead into a 58-45 advantage with 8:09 remaining. It was a double-digit ballgame the rest of the way as Adelphi went 5-for-6 from the stripe throughout the final 2:01 to seal the victory.

For the Panthers, junior forward Cali Balfour scored 19 points and fifth-year guard Ashley Gomez contributed 16.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are home Saturday to host Southern Connecticut State in the first half of a league doubleheader. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm. The twinbill will be featured on national television as part of the American Sports Network's Division II Showcase and will also be streamed live on www.ncaa.com. The men's game will get underway at 4:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Panthers have a 3:30 pm meeting at league rival New Haven.
