GOLDEN KNIGHTS DEFEAT HIGH SCORING SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE 85-79 ON NATIONAL TELEVISION

Highlights from www.ncaa.com
ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose held the nation's eighth highest scoring team to 12.5 points under its season average to upend Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State 85-79 at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium this afternoon.

The contest was televised nationally as part of the American Sports Network's Division II Showcase and it certainly lived up to the billing with 12 lead changes and seven ties.

Junior forward Tyler Sayre registered his second consecutive 30-plus scoring game with 32 points and seven rebounds to lead the Golden Knights (11-13/9-9 NE-10). Also, sophomore guard Mical-Ryan Boyd tossed in a career-high 24 points behind 4-for-7 shooting from the floor. Sophomore forward Jack Jones added 10 points and seven boards, while junior guard Damon Coleman contributed 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Saint Rose got off on the right foot by jumping out to a 21 point, 36-15, lead after Sayre finished inside with 5:28 to go until intermission. However, the Owls (19-6/14-3 NE-10) closed out the half with an 18-5 run that made it a 41-33 ballgame at the break.

Southern Connecticut State picked up where it left off at the onset of the second stanza to forge a 43-43 deadlock at the 15:34 mark after senior forward Stefon Williams finished a fast break. The game was tied on five more occasions throughout the ensuing eight minutes, before Sayre and Boyd sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around an Owls empty trip that made it 68-64 Golden Knights with 6:27 remaining.

Southern Connecticut State then managed to get within a hoop, 80-78, with 1:00 to go, but Saint Rose went 5-for-6 from the foul line down to stretch to seal the victory before a raucous home crowd.

Senior guard Desmond Williams tossed in 30 points and junior guard Michael Mallory scored 18 to pace the Owls.

Looking ahead, both squads have 7:30 pm NE-10 meetings this Wednesday. The Golden Knights head back on the road to take on Pace University in Pleasantville. Meanwhile, Southern Connecticut State has a home date with crosstown rival New Haven.
