SAINT ROSE EDGED AT ADELPHI

GARDEN CITY, NY-The College of Saint Rose came up with a steal to afford itself a chance to tie the game in the final six seconds, but a 3-pointer by junior forward Tyler Sayre rattled off the front rim to allow host Adelphi to upend the Golden Knights 74-69 in Northeast-10 Conference action this evening.

Sayre tossed in a season-high 33 points while sophomore guard Mical-Ryan Boyd added 16 points and seven rebounds to lead Saint Rose (10-13/8-9 NE-10).

The Golden Knights got off to a great start and opened up an 11 point, 19-8, lead after Boyd knocked down a 3-pointer with 13:24 to go until the break. It was a still a nine point, 23-14, ballgame four minutes later after senior guard Max Weaver hit a jumper.

However, the Panthers closed out the opening stanza with an 18-3 run that allowed them to take a 32-26 halftime lead.

Adelphi subsequently led by as many as a dozen during the final 20 minutes, but a trey from sophomore guard Jamaal Greenwood and a Sayre jumper once again made it a six point, 63-57, affair with 4:58 left.

The Golden Knights hung tough and were within three, 72-69, when Greenwood scored a layup with eight ticks showing on the clock. Weaver then stole the ensuing inbounds pass and dished to Sayre whose shot refused to go down. The Panthers converted a pair of perfunctory free throws at the other end to account for the final margin.

Sophomore center Manny Suarez finished with 24 points and nine boards, while senior guard Anthony Libroia contributed 18 points, five rebounds, and five assists to pace Adelphi (18-7/10-7 NE-10).

Looking ahead, Saint Rose is back home Saturday to host Southern Connecticut State in the second half of a league doubleheader. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm. The twinbill will be featured on national television as part of the American Sports Network's Division II Showcase and will also be streamed live on www.ncaa.com. The women's game will get underway at 2:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Panthers have a 1:30 pm meeting at league rival New Haven.
