BRONXVILLE, NY-The College of Saint Rose held off a late charge by host Concordia to chalk up a 66-64 non-conference victory tonight. The Golden Knights (4-5) shot a season-high 73.1 percent (19-for26) from the foul line to help their cause.
Â
"We made some runs and built a couple of 10 point leads, but Concordia never quit and gave us all we could handle.
Karissa Birthwright had a career game and really kept us in it. We need to take better care of ball, but our free throw shooting was clutch," said head coach
Karen Haag.
Â
Saint Rose led by eight points on 11 occasions and appeared to be in the catbird seat behind a 62-52 advantage after senior forward
Staci Barrett canned a pair from the stripe with 2:44 to go in the ballgame. However, the Clippers (2-6) scored 10 of the game's ensuing 12 points to pull within a bucket, 64-62, when junior guard Lyric Bench canned the second of two free throws with 46 seconds left.
Â
The Golden Knights then turned the ball over to afford Concordia a chance to tie the game for the first time since it stood 37-37 midway through the third period. However, the Clippers missed a pair of free throws and a follow up jumper, before being forced to foul. Senior guard
Taylor Nazon then hit her two from the stripe to seal the victory prior to Concordia converting a perfunctory layup as time expired.
Â
Birthwright, a sophomore forward, went 11-for-13 from the floor on the way to a career-high 25 points for Saint Rose. She also hauled in seven rebounds, while Nazon and Barrett contributed 17 and 12 points respectively.
Â
For Concordia, senior guard Jessica Rosalbo scored 17 points and junior guard Julianne Wilkinson finished with 16.
Â
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are off until Saturday and Sunday, December 17 and 18, when they take part in the American International College Tournament in Springfield. Saint Rose faces Dominican on Saturday and Bridgeport on Sunday. Tip-off for both contests is 3:30 pm. Meanwhile, the Clippers host Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival Caldwell this Saturday at 2:00 pm.
