SPRINGFIELD-The College of Saint Rose clawed back from a three point, fourth period deficit to upend Bridgeport 58-54 today at the American International College Tournament.
Â
The Golden Knights (6-5) outscored the Purple Knights 7-3 throughout the final 1:52 and senior forward
Staci Barrett recorded her fourth "double-double" of the year to lead the charge.
Â
"We battled for 40 minutes with a tough opponent. I am really proud of our poise down the stretch. We got a huge game out of Staci and played solid defense. Our rebounding was on point. It's great to get a 'W' in a nip and tuck game," said head coach
Karen Haag.
Â
It was two possession affair throughout the final 14 minutes. Junior guard
Britani Stowe drained a trey to deadlock the contest for the fifth time, 44-44, with 8:05 remaining. The game was still tied at the 1:52 mark after Bridgeport sophomore center Samnell Vonleh finished inside while being fouled.
Â
However, Barrett made the first of a pair of free throws at the other end and Saint Rose never trailed again.
Â
Barrett finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore guard
Ashley Vanderwall and senior guard
Taylor Nazon recorded 12 points and seven boards apiece.
Â
Senior guard Aaliyah Mercer paced Bridgeport (8-5) with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Â
Looking ahead, Saint Rose returns home on Friday, December 30 for a 1:00 pm non-conference date versus Goldey-Beacom.
Notes: The Golden Knights have now won four of their last five games, including three straight…Barrett and Nazon have each been in double-figures scoring throughout 10 of the squad's 11 contests to date…Eight of those 11 games have been away from the familiar confines of the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
