SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO-Junior guard
Mical-Ryan Boyd drained a jumper from the top of the key with 1.8 seconds remaining in regulation to lift The College of Saint Rose to a 44-42 victory versus Sioux Falls today at the Puerto Rico Basketball Classic.
Â
The Golden Knights (6-0) were outrebounded 47-33 by the Gorillas (2-4), but forced 21 turnovers that they turned into a like number of points at the humid enclosed outdoor gymnasium on the University of Puerto Rico–Rio Piedras campus.
Â
"Sioux Falls gave us all we could handle today. The game came down to stops and rebounds. We were fortunate to get the last 50-50 of the game, which led to Mical Ryan Boyd's jumper at the end. I'm happy for our guys who fought for 40 minutes," said head coach
Brian Beaury.
Â
Boyd led Saint Rose with 11 points while junior forward
Julian Lipinski finished with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists. Also, junior forward
Jack Jones wound up with eight points while senior guard
Chris Dorgler contributed seven points, seven boards and four steals.
Â
The game was close throughout with the second half featuring six ties and four lead changes, before Boyd came through with the clutch shot that allowed the Golden Knights (6-0) to remain unbeaten on the year.
Â
Saint Rose trailed for most of the first half before closing with a 9-3 run that transformed a 19-14 deficit into a 23-22 lead at the break. Lipinski hit a pair of field goals and Jones knocked down a 3-pointer to highlight the jaunt. It was then anyone's ballgame throughout the second stanza.
Â
Senior guard Clint Thomas and senior center Daniel Hurtt led the Cougars (2-4) with 14 and 13 points respectively.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose continues its stay tomorrow in San Juan. The Golden Knights will meet Pittsburg State (KS) at 12:00 pm. Meanwhile, Sioux Falls will take on Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at 3:00 pm.
Notes: Saint Rose is 6-0 for the first time since 2003-04 when the Golden Knights opened 7-0 on the way to a 19-10 campaign…Saint Rose has held all six of its foes to less than 45.0 percent shooting from the floor…Today marked the first time this season the Golden Knights were outrebounded…Boyd has been in double-figures scoring in all but one game thus far…Today's 44 point total represent the fewest in a win throughout the program's NCAA era (1991-92).
