SAINT ROSE SWEEPS ASSUMPTION

Golden Knights snap three-match skid and improve to 8-3 at home

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose recorded three-set, season-highs of 47 kills and 41 assists in tonight's 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-22) victory against Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption inside the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. In the process, the Golden Knights (10-13/5-6 NE-10) snapped a three-match skid and ran their home record to 8-3 this autumn.

"This was an important win for us as we head into the final stretch of our season. The girls played together as a team and trusted each other. Our defense was the key to this match. We fought to keep the ball alive so our offense could finish the job," said head coach Vanessa Volpe-Rivera.

Senior middle hitter Maryellen Devic registered her 16th "double-double" of the year with 17 kills and 15 digs to pace Saint Rose. She was also efficient by virtue of a .342 attack percentage behind just four errors throughout 38 swings. Senior libero Samantha Atchinson and senior middle hitter Jennifer Gundrum led the defensive effort with 17 digs and five blocks respectively. The latter also contributed five kills.

Additionally, sophomore setter Sam Kubik and senior setter Erica Ziskin handed out 21 and 14 assists respectively. Senior outside hitter Rachel Salasky and freshman outside hitter Stevie Schweitzer also played key roles with nine kills apiece.

For the Greyhounds (5-16/2-9 NE-10), junior middle hitter Olivia Burke hit a staggering .440 on 11 kills and no errors throughout 25 attempts.

Saint Rose put itself out front by rallying from a 7-3 deficit to win the opener. The Golden Knights used a 10-6 run in the second that transformed a 9-8 lead into a 19-14 cushion. They then completed the sweep by closing out the final set with three unanswered points.

Looking ahead, both teams have home matches Saturday. Saint Rose takes on Merrimack at 1:00 pm for Senior Day. Meanwhile, Assumption hosts Franklin Pierce at noon.
