CALDWELL USES LATE SURGE TO DEFEAT GOLDEN KNIGHTS AT CONFERENCE CHALLENGE

Barrett Records Her Second "Double-Double" In As Many Days To Lead Saint Rose

SYRACUSE-Caldwell outscored The College of Saint Rose 14-7 throughout the final 4:38 to upend the Golden Knights 72-69 on the final day of action at the Conference Challenge on the Le Moyne campus.

The Golden Knights (1-1) led for all but six minutes and were still up a bucket with 54 ticks showing on the clock, but the Cougars hit a 3-pointer, came up a steal, and buried a pair of free throws during the final 43 seconds to capture the win.

Senior forward Staci Barrett recorded her second "double-double" in as many days to lead Saint Rose with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Taylor Nazon and sophomore guard Ashley Vanderwall finished with 18 and 17 points respectively, while senior guard Britani Stowe contributed seven points, seven boards and five assists.

Junior guard Kristen Drogsler went 5-for-6 from long distance to lead Caldwell (2-0) with a game-high 28 points.

The Golden Knights outscored the Cougars 18-9 throughout the second period to take a 35-24 lead at intermission. Drogsler then canned a 3-pointer at the third period buzzer to get Caldwell within a hoop, 50-48, heading to the fourth.

The final 10 minutes proved to be eventful with seven lead changes and a pair of ties. Vanderwall canned a trey to make it 62-58 Saint Rose with 4:38 remaining. Two minutes later, Cougars junior guard Sharrell Sanders scored inside to deadlock it at 67-67.

Nazon then answered with a layup with 54 seconds remaining, but Drogsler countered with a 3-pointer out of a timeout that put the Caldwell ahead to stay.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights open the Northeast-10 Conference portion of their 2016-17 slate Wednesday at American International in Springfield. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm. Meanwhile, the Cougars play their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener Wednesday as well with a 5:30 pm meeting at Felician in Rutherford, NJ.
