ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose put five players in double-figures scoring and withstood a hectic final two minutes to upend visiting Molloy 74-68 in the first day of action of the
Northeast-10 Challenge Presented by Hilton Garden Inn Albany Medical Center.
Â
"This was a good start for our guys. Molloy is a talented, well coached, stingy team that never gives up. Our guys stayed the course and played through some sloppiness to finish the game strong," said head coach
Brian Beaury.
Â
The contest was single digits for most of the way until the Golden Knights (1-0) built their largest of 12, 66-54, with 3:28 to go after junior forward
Anthony Russell buried a 3-pointer.
Â
It was still a 10 point affair two minutes later when senior forward
Chris Dorgler canned a pair of free throws.
Â
However, a layup by Molloy (0-1) sophomore guard Curtis Jenkins followed by a 3-pointer from senior guard Charlie Marquardt off a turnover suddenly made it a five point game, 68-63, with 1:05 remaining.
Â
The Golden Knights kept their cool though as junior guard
Mical-Ryan Boyd finished a layup at the other end to leave little doubt about the eventual outcome.
Â
Boyd led the quintet of double-digits scorers with 17 points behind 3-for-6 shooting from the arc. Russell tossed in 11 points and handed out three assists throughout 16 minutes off the bench. Junior forward
Julian Lipinski, senior guard
Damon Coleman, and senior forward
Tyler Sayre added 10 apiece.
Â
For Molloy, freshman guard Nick Corbett scored a game-high 20 points.
In today's first game, Le Moyne junior guard Russell Sangster scored 20 points to lead Le Moyne past Concordia, 83-65.
Â
Looking ahead, the Northeast-10 Challenge is scheduled to conclude tomorrow. Saint Rose will face Concordia at 3:00 pm, while Le Moyne and Molloy will meet at 1:00 pm.
