ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose made the most of its chances to upend
Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption 2-1 today at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Â
The Greyhounds engineered a 20-7 shot advantage and a 6-1 corner kick differential with little to show for it as the Golden Knights converted when they needed to. Ultimately, sophomore forward
Ryan Rooney scored both goals and senior keeper
Christian Esposito made a career-high 11 saves, including a spectacular stop in the opening five minutes, Â to propel Saint Rose (4-6/2-5 NE-10) to its second straight victory.
Â
"I am very proud of the gritty result the team earned today. Assumption is a very dangerous team who put us under a lot of pressure throughout the game. We showed great resiliency and did the little things needed on both sides of the ball to win today," said head coach
John Ciano.
Â
The Greyhounds (5-6/4-3 NE-10) dictated pace for much of the first half, but Rooney converted a penalty kick in the 25th minute to afford Saint Rose a 1-0 lead at intermission.
Â
Assumption leveled in the 69th when freshman midfielder Christopher Romero drove home a 15-yard drive off a rebound.
Â
The match subsequently had all the makings of an overtime affair, but sophomore forward
Kyle Clemens touched a pass through the area from the left flank that Rooney lined to the lower left side of the net.
Â
Looking ahead, both squads are back on the pitch for 7:00 pm NE-10 matches Tuesday. The Golden Knights host New Haven, while the Greyhounds travel to North Andover, MA to take on Merrimack.
Notes: Rooney has three game-winners on the year…He is currently the top goal scorer in the NE-10 with nine strikes…Esposito is second in the conference with 49 saves.
