ALBANY-Sophomore forward
Ryan Rooney converted a penalty kick with less than three minutes left in the second overtime session to propel The College of Saint Rose to a 3-2 triumph versus
Northeast-10 Conference rival New Haven tonight.
"This was a big win for us. New Haven is a well-coached and resilient team. I was very proud of the way we played them tonight. It has been fun to watch the growth and maturation of our group and I am so happy for them to get to experience the most exciting moment in college soccer," said head coach
John Ciano.
Rooney was awarded the penalty after being fouled in the box to set the stage for the game-winner after the Golden Knights (5-6-0/3-5-0 NE-10) built a 26-8 shot advantage, including a 14-2 margin in threats on target, and a 10-2 corner kick differential.

Junior midfielder
Suleiman Haruna-iya, senior back
Pablo Lajeunesse and senior forward
Joshua Hanif also figured in the scoring to help Saint Rose win its third straight match.
Â
Freshman forward Nate Peduzzi and senior forward Rob Poirier each found the back of the net for the Chargers (5-6-1/2-5-1 NE-10). Meanwhile, freshman keeper Stefano Lorusso made five saves in each half and another in the second OT to keep New Haven close.
Â
The Golden Knights afforded themselves an early cushion by scoring twice in the opening 32 minutes, before the Chargers cut the deficit in half in the 39th to make 2-1 at intermission. They then deadlocked it in the 58th.
Â
Haruna-iya commenced the scoring by driving home a Hanif rebound. Lajeunesse knocked in a carom off a Rooney shot and then Peduzzi took advantage of a Saint Rose miscue in front of its own goal to slice the deficit in half. Poirier knotted the affair when he finished a cross from the right side that came from the foot of freshman midfielder Pablo Perez.
Â
Looking ahead, both squads have conference road dates Saturday. Saint Rose has a 6:00 pm meeting at Southern Connecticut State in New Haven, while the Chargers have an 8:00 pm appointment at American International in Springfield.
Notes: Rooney has accounted for four goals and all three game-winners during the streak…He leads the NE-10 with 10 goals and 21 points, and is furthermore just the fourth player in school annals to register 10 goals in a season…The Golden Knights improved to 4-2 at home with tonight's win.
