COLCHESTER, VT-The College of Saint Rose played to a 1-1 draw at
Norheast-10 Conference rival Saint Michael's this afternoon. The match was close throughout with the Purple Knights manufacturing slight advantages in shots (18-16) and corner kicks (8-7).
"This was obviously a disappointing result as we were in dire need of three points. The game was an even contest and an entertaining one for the fans. I give a lot of credit to the Saint Michael's side. They are an organized group that gave a very determined effort throughout the afternoon," said Saint Rose head coach
John Ciano.
Saint Michael's struck first before sophomore forward
Ryan Rooney finished a play initiated by junior midfielder
Suleiman Haruna-iya with 17:05 elapsed, a mere three minutes after senior forward Aaron DaCosta put the Purple Knights up 1-0.
Â
DaCosta forced a turnover in the Golden Knights (5-8-2/3-7-2 NE-10) end and struck home a shot from outside the area at the 17:05 mark. Rooney then converted a rebound off a Haruna-iya drive for his league leading 13th strike of the year.
Â
Saint Rose proceeded to generate a 5-2 shot differential after halftime and also developed a pair of corner kick chances in both extra sessions. However, the Purple Knights nearly squeaked out the victory as DaCosta drove a shot off the crossbar in the final minute.
Â
Senior keeper
Christian Esposito recorded four saves for the Golden Knights, while fellow senior Taylor Wallace turned aside five threats-on-target at the other end.
Â
Looking ahead, both teams will wrap up their 2016 regular-season campaigns with 7:00 pm matches Friday. Saint Rose hosts #9 Adelphi, while Saint Michael's heads to North Andover, MA to take on Merrimack.
Notes: Rooney is only the second player in program annals to record 13 goals in a season…Saint Rose Hall of Famer Jesus Valbuena twice pulled off the feat with a school record 21 in 1990 to go along with 16 in 1989…Rooney has scored at least one goal in six of the last seven matches…Three of his strikes during that span have been game-winners…Five of the Golden Knights eight setbacks this fall have been by one goal.
