ALBANY-Ninth-ranked Adelphi scored once in each half to upend The College of Saint Rose 2-0 in
Northeast-10 Conference action tonight at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The match marked the regular-season finale for both sides.
Â
The Panthers (14-1-1/12-0-1 NE-10) were able to run their win streak to seven matches heading into next week's NE-10 Championship. Adelphi earned the top seed and will host eighth-seed Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday.
Â
Tonight's match was played at a relative deliberate pace on a cold damp pitch following yesterday's unseasonable snowfall that hit the Capital Region. The Panthers outshot the Golden Knights (5-9-2/3-8-2 NE-10) 12-4, including 7-3 in the second half, and manufactured a 5-3 corner kick advantage.
Â
Saint Rose developed its greatest threat in the 82nd minute when sophomore forward
Ryan Rooney, whose 13 goals on the year are the third highest in program history, created some space and drove a shot that forced Adelphi sophomore keeper Joseph Blassett to come up with a key save.
Â
Junior midfielder Toni Soler accounted for both Panthers strikes. Senior midfielder Caelan Hueber delivered a backwards pass from the middle of the area that Soler drove inside the lower right post from 20-yards out with 16:12 elapsed.
Â
Soler then settled a ball in space on the left flank and delivered a volley that dropped underneath the crossbar on the far side with 58:46 gone by for just his third goal of the season.
