ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose snapped Southern Connecticut State's five match unbeaten streak by upending the Owls 3-2 in
Northeast-10 Conference action today.
Â
The Golden Knights (10-5-0/7-5-0 NE-10) scored all three of their goals in the first half to chalk up a victory on a windy, rain soaked day at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Â
"This was a huge NE-10 win today. Our girls battled through the weather conditions and played with a lot of heart," said head coach
Laurie Darling Gutheil.
Â
Freshman forward
Nina Predanic scored twice and senior midfielder
Sammy Blizzard also scored to lead the Saint Rose offense. Sophomore keeper
Madison Taylor made five of her eight saves in the second half to preserve the victory.
Â
Freshman midfielder
Karmyn Carter help get the Golden Knights started. Carter slipped a pass from the right side of the area that Predanic drove home with 16:53 elapsed. Freshman midfielder Karoline Petersen tied it 1-1 at the 27:38 mark when she redirected a corner kick.
Â
However, Blizzard jumped on a loose ball near the goal line following a corner eight minutes later and then Predanic struck the game-winner just three minutes prior to halftime when she intercepted a Southern defender deep in the Golden Knights offensive end and slid a shot into a near empty goal.
Â
The Owls (7-6-3/6-4-2 NE-10) then cut their deficit in half with 10 minutes gone by in the second period, but Saint Rose stood stout to chalk up the key late season victory.
Â
Looking ahead, both sides are back on the pitch Wednesday. The Golden Knights have a 7:00 pm meeting at New Haven, while Southern Connecticut State has a 5:00 pm home date with Saint Michael's.
