GOLDEN KNIGHTS UPEND STONEHILL ON JOHN PESCE DAY

John Pesce Memorial Award Presentation Video
ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose held Stonehill to 29.6 percent (16-for-54) shooting and turned 16 Skyhawks turnovers into 29 points en route to this afternoon's 69-53 Northeast-10 Conference victory on John Pesce Day at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. In the process, the Golden Knights snapped Stonehill's (15-5/10-4 NE-10) four-game win streak.

Junior forward Tyler Sayre scored 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds, and was subsequently recognized as the Capital District Chapter of the Saint Rose Alumni Association Player of the Game. Also, freshman guard Shane Herrity scored 12 points and handed out a season-high nine assists, with only one turnover, throughout 29 minutes of reserve duty.

The two teams exchanged the lead on three occasions during the opening six minutes, before the Golden Knights (9-11/7-7 NE-10) took off on a 26-11 run that snapped a 10-10 deadlock and put them up by 15, 36-21, with 4:15 left until intermission. Herrity and sophomore forward Anthony Russell sandwiched the spurt with a pair of 3-pointers.

The Skyhawks managed to whittle their deficit to nine two minutes later, but a pair of Sayre free throws made it an 11 point, 38-27, ballgame at the break.

Stonehill then got back to within six, 45-39, when senior guard Carter Smith drained a trey with 14:28 to go and was still within eight, 52-44, following another Smith trifecta with 8:56 left. However, after each team came up empty on their next possession, Sayre completed a three point play and Saint Rose led by double digits the rest of the way.

Prior to today's game, Herrity and junior guard Jocelyn Strack of the women's team were presented the inaugural John Pesce Memorial Award. The award has been established by John's family, friends, and teammates. It is given to a student-athlete who embodies his spirit and commitment to team and school. Pesce graduated from Saint Rose in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He was a loyal member of the Golden Knights men's basketball team from 1984-86. In 2015, he passed away following a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose is back home this Wednesday to face Upstate Challenge rival Le Moyne in the second half of a conference doubleheader. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm. It is also Academic and Athletic Appreciation Night. Saint Rose student-athletes will be honored at halftime of both games for outstanding achievement in those two areas. Meanwhile, Stonehill is also home Wednesday with a 7:30 pm NE-10 date versus Bentley.
