ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose overcame an early eight point deficit and withstood a pair of second half surges to upend
Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Michael's 75-65 today at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
Â
The Golden Knights (8-10/6-6 NE-10) put four players in double figures scoring and manufactured 19 points off of 20 Purple Knights (3-14/1-11 NE-10) miscues to improve to 7-2 at home.
Â
Freshman forward
Pharroh Gordon scored 13 of his career high 19 points, on 7-for-9 shooting, in the second half to lead Saint Rose. Sophomore guard
Mical-Ryan Boyd and junior forward
Tyler Sayre finished with 14 points each, while sophomore forward
Julian Lipinski added 10.
Â
Additionally, junior guard
Damon Coleman filled up the box score with eight points, seven assists without a turnover, and five steals.
Â
Saint Rose trailed by six, 23-17, with 17:23 to go in the first half before Sayre and Boyd drilled a pair of jumpers and freshman guard
Shane Herrity buried a 3-pointer from the left wing to cap a 13-2 jaunt that made it 30-25 Golden Knights. Saint Michael's countered with six unanswered points to regain the lead, but Gordon nailed a trey and sophomore forward
Anthony Russell drilled one himself just before the buzzer to make it 36-31 Saint Rose at the break.
Â
The Golden Knights kept their foot on the accelerator and outscored the Purple Knights 17-6 during the opening five minutes of the second period to boost their advantage to 16, 53-37. However, the Purple Knights countered by scoring 15 of the ensuing 19 points to get back to within five, 57-52, after freshman forward Winston Jones II finished a fast break.
Â
Saint Rose showed its mettle by holding its guests without a field throughout the following five minutes to go up by 12, 66-54, when Coleman went 1-for-2 from the stripe after being fouled on a breakaway off his own steal.
Â
Saint Michael's made one last push to get back to six, 66-60, with 2:14 to go, but a Boyd jumper and a Gordon 3-pointer made it 71-61 Saint Rose and pretty much left little doubt about the eventual outcome.
Sophomore guard Colin Richey tossed in 15 points throughout 22 minutes of reserve duty and junior forward Matt Bonds recorded his nation leading 13th "double-double" with 12 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Purple Knights.
Â
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are back on the road Wednesday for the second part of an NE-10 doubleheader at Bentley in Waltham, MA. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm. Meanwhile, Saint Michael's returns home Tuesday to host New Haven at 7:30 pm.
