GOLDEN KNIGHTS OVERCOME EARLY DEFICIT TO UPEND NE-10 RIVAL ASSUMPTION

ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose overcame a 12 point deficit in the final four minutes of the first half to upend visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption 73-63 at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium this evening.

The Golden Knights (7-8/5-4 NE-10) misfired on 12 of their first 16 six shots throughout the opening 14 minutes, but went 19-for-32 (.594) from the floor the rest of the way to snap a four-game skid.

Junior forward Tyler Sayre made all 10 of his free throws en route to a game-high 22 points, to go along with eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Anthony Russell went 6-for-9 from long distance on the way to a career-high 18 points for Saint Rose. Also, freshman guard Shane Herrity contributed eight points, seven boards, and six assists with only one turnover.

The Golden Knights closed the final 3:28 of the first half with a 14-2 run that transformed a 27-15 deficit into a 29-29 deadlock at the break. Russell canned two of his six 3-pointers and Sayre buried a pair of jumpers to lead the charge.

They still trailed by as many as five, 35-30, in the opening three minutes of the second stanza before Russell canned yet another trey four minutes later to put Saint Rose ahead to stay, 45-43. The Greyhounds (6-9/2-8 NE-10) kept it a one or two possession game for virtually the rest of the way until Sayre and freshman guard Pharroh Gordon combined to go 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final minute.

Sophomore guard Kamili Bey finished with 13 points and nine boards, and junior forward Declan Soukup scored 11 to lead Assumption.

Looking ahead, both teams have conference dates set for Saturday. Saint Rose will head to Rindge, NH for a 3:30 pm meeting at Franklin Pierce; while the Greyhounds will host New Haven at 3:00 pm.
