OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Middle hitters Kate Brock and Rachel Guida laid down nine kills apiece as NYIT took a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-20) victory over The College of Saint Rose volleyball team Friday night at the Long Island Invitational, hosted by Dowling College.
The Golden Knights drop to 0-1, while the Bears sit at 1-0 on the season.
Junior outside hitter Maryellen Devic led Saint Rose with 12 kills and 13 digs to pick up a season-opening double-double. Senior right side Carissa Dube followed behind with nine kills, and junior libero Samantha Atchinson racked up 16 digs. Fellow junior Erica Ziskin and freshman Sam Kubik combined for 31 assists throughout the night.
Both teams went back and forth early in the first set as the score sat tied seven times before Saint Rose went on a 5-0 run for a 13-8 lead. The Golden Knights maintained the advantage until another tie at the 18-all mark, followed by a 7-0 spurt for the Bears, allowing them to claim game one.
NYIT kept momentum going in game two, holding a steady lead throughout the entire set and eventually taking the 25-22 win.
Saint Rose got ahead early in the final set with a 4-1 advantage, but the Bears battled back to take a 10-7 lead, and kept building from there to take the match.
The Golden Knights continue play in the Invitational on Saturday starting with the host Lions at 10:00 am, followed by a meeting with East Stroudsburg at noon.
