SAINT ROSE MAKES A STATEMENT IN DRAW WITH #11 MERRIMACK

ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose left another positive impression on the Northeast-10 Conference by playing to a scoreless draw with eleventh-ranked Merrimack tonight at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex

The Warriors (7-1-1-/3-1-1 NE-10) had plenty to play for. They entered the evening off their lone loss of the season, a 2-0 setback to visiting Le Moyne whom the Golden Knights (4-2-1/3-1-1 NE-10) upended 2-1 six days ago.

The match wound up being played fairly evenly throughout regulation with Merrimack manufacturing a 13-10 shot advantage and a 6-5 corner kick differential. However, the Warriors developed the lone four corners in the extra sessions amid a torrential downpour that hampered play after halftime.

For Saint Rose, junior midfielder Joshua Hanif delivered two shots-on-goal and senior keeper Colan Balkwell recorded five saves.

The Golden Knights, who are off to the best start in their 34-year history, engineered several forays that would have allowed them to extend their win streak to three matches. Sophomore back Nathan Brown got in the air for a header off a corner that sailed wide left in the eighth minute. Sophomore forward Romaine Williamson then had a shot from the middle of the area deflected off the goal line by a Merrimack defender during the final three minutes of the first period.

In the opening 13 minutes of the second half, Williamson and Hanif each created dangerous threats from within 15-yards. Senior midfielder Nick Iuorno then made a nifty run up the middle of the pitch in the 63rd minute only to have his strike redirected at the last moment, which summed up how the evening eventually unfolded.

Looking ahead, both sides return to the pitch for key conference matches this Saturday. Saint Rose will host league rival Bentley at 4:30 pm for Senior Day, while Merrimack will travel to Long Island for a 6:00 pm meeting at Adelphi.
