SAINT ROSE SWEPT BY VISITING WILDCATS

ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-27, 19-25, 24-26) setback to visiting Daemen College Saturday afternoon in Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.

Junior outside hitter Rachel Salasky led the Golden Knights (3-5 overall) with seven kills, followed by fellow junior Maryellen Devic with five. Devic also registered six digs. Junior Libero Samantha Atchinson led the defense with eight digs, while freshman setter Sam Kubik dished out 12 assists. Senior right side Carissa Dube put up a pair of solo blocks, and assisted on four others.

In set one, the score tied at every point leading up to the 5-5 mark, when the Wildcats (5-6) jumped out to an 11-6 lead. Saint Rose battled back to trail by less than three for the remainder of the set, tying the game at 17-all, 22-22 and 25-all, followed by an attack error from Salasky, and a kill from Daemen's junior outside hitter Amber Drzymala, allowing the Wildcats to take the set.

The Golden Knights held a 3-0 lead to start set two, but the Wildcats rallied with a 6-0 run to move ahead, and maintained their momentum from there. Saint Rose was unable to string more than two points together at a time throughout the remainder of the set, allowing Daemen to take a 2-0 overall lead.

Game three was a back-and-forth battle as the score tied 10 times, with the Golden Knights trailing for most of the set. The final tie came in at 24-24, followed by a kill and a service ace from freshman outside hitter Ashley Drzymala.

Saint Rose hits the road this week, starting with an Upstate Challenge match and a kickoff to the Northeast-10 Conference season at Le Moyne on Tuesday at 7:00 pm, and heads to Southern Connecticut on Friday for a 6:00 pm meeting. The Golden Knights return home on Saturday, October 3 to host Adelphi.
