SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College volleyball team had three players register double-figure kills marks Tuesday evening as the Dolphins topped The College of Saint Rose 3-2 (25-20, 16-25, 11-25, 25-20, 11-15) in its Northeast-10 Conference season opener at Ted Grant Court.
Junior outside hitter Maryellen Devic led the Golden Knights (3-6 overall, 0-1 NE-10) with 14 kills, and also picked up 16 digs, for her sixth double-double of the season. Senior right side Carissa Dube followed with nine kills, while freshman setter Sam Kubik dished out 22 assists, and junior Samantha Atchinson led the defense with 21 digs.
After splitting games one and two, the Dolphins (9-3, 1-1) jumped out to a 2-1 overall lead in set three. The game started off with three ties and two lead changes before Le Moyne went on a 10-5 run, and forced Saint Rose to call its first timeout of the set. The Dolphins kept pushing, moved out to a 17-9 lead and laid down an 8-2 spurt to cap the game at 25-11.
In game four, the Golden Knights found momentum as they took a 15-7 advantage and Le Moyne needed a break. The Dolphins were able to nearly double their score while Saint Rose maintained its lead, but called a timeout at the 20-15 mark. Both teams nabbed five points before the set ended, resulting in a 25-20 win for Saint Rose to force the deciding set.
Saint Rose was able to get out to a 4-2 lead in the fifth, but gave up a 9-0 run to give Le Moyne the 11-4 lead. The Golden Knights called a timeout and nabbed three quick points to bring the score to 11-7, and took turns, going point-for-point until the end, with Le Moyne coming out on top of the 15-11 decision.
Saint Rose remains on the road this weekend with a 6:00 pm meeting at Southern Connecticut State on Friday. The Golden Knights return home Saturday, October 3 to host league foe Adelphi at 1:00 pm in Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
