GOLDEN KNIGHTS GET PAST AIC IN HOME OPENER

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose scored the winning run in the eighth inning and escaped a ninth inning jam to chalk up a 2-1 victory against Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division rival American International in its home opener this afternoon.

Senior catcher Lukas Nethaway went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk, and senior right fielder Joseph Carcone finished 2-for-3 to extend their hit streaks to six games. Also, junior left fielder
Nick Venier finished 1-for-3 and drove in the other run for the Golden Knights (5-11/2-3 NE-10).

Meanwhile, junior right-hander Phil Zdanowski and junior southpaw Joe Pokrentowski both had superlative outings. Zdanowski allowed only an unearned run on three hits and fanned seven throughout 6.0 innings of work before handing the ball to Pokrentowski who tossed 3.0 innings of no-hit ball to pick up the win.

Saint Rose went up 1-0 in the third when freshman center fielder Sean Maki reached on an error and came around two batters later on a Venier sacrifice fly. The Yellow Jackets (4-13/1-5 NE-10) subsequently tied it in the fifth when graduate student center fielder Dave Clark lofted a sacrifice fly to left after American International loaded the bases on a pair of errors and a hit batsman.

The Golden Knights then took advantage of a leadoff error that led to the winning run in the eighth when Nethaway belted a sacrifice fly himself to score Maki.

In the ninth, the Yellow Jackets put runners at the corners with one down before Pokrentowski induced a pair groundball outs to run his record to 2-1 on the year.

For American International, junior right-hander Colin Sledzik was the tough luck loser. He did not surrender an earned run and scattered six hits throughout 8.0 innings, but saw his record go to 3-1.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose is scheduled to play a noon doubleheader at Franklin Pierce in Rindge, NH this Saturday. Meanwhile, American International has a three-game home league divisional series with Le Moyne this weekend.
