GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – A massive 44-point second half for No. 12 Adelphi handed The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team a 69-56 loss Wednesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
Leading by just one at the break, the Panthers (23-3 overall, 16-2 in the NE-10) opened the second half with a 10-point run to force a Saint Rose (11-14, 7-12) timeout at the 16:41 mark. Saint Rose battled to cut the deficit, and came within as much as six points on three different occasions, the most recent with 8:59 remaining, but the Panthers kept the pressure high throughout the remainder of the game.
Adelphi followed the six-point advantage with a 17-5 spurt through the next five and a half minutes to hold a 59-42 lead. The Golden Knights then collected 17 of their 32 points of the half in the final 3:35 of the game, but it would not be enough to combat the large lead already set by the Panthers.
The first half showed an entirely different script than its follower. Saint Rose maintained control of the lead for nearly the first 14 minutes, giving up the advantage twice by just one point each time. The score tied three times to follow, the final with only 24 seconds remaining. Senior guard Kelly Mannix sank her third free throw of the half just one second later to put the Panthers ahead entering halftime.
Seniors Mariah Lesure and Jamie Hutcheson, along with junior guard Keyontae Williams, chipped in 11 points apiece to lead the Golden Knights on the night. Hutcheson also nabbed eight boards, while Williams dished out five assists and registered four steals. Mannix collected 19 points, including 12 from beyond the arc, to lead the Panthers.
Saint Rose closes out its regular season slate on Saturday at Southern Connecticut starting at 1:30 pm, and will await the final standings of the NE-10 in hopes of a spot in the league's post-season tournament.
