GOLDEN KNIGHTS FALL AT #2 SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

NEW HAVEN-Second-ranked Southern Connecticut State had to rally from a 14 point, second half deficit to upend The College of Saint Rose 86-79 in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon. The host Owls (6-1/3-1 NE-10) closed the game on a 40-19 run and shot 57.7 percent (15-for-26) from the floor throughout the second half to improve to 3-0 at home.

Sophomore forward Julian Lipinski led four Golden Knights (5-3/3-2 NE-10) in double figures with a career-high 18 points. Junior forward Tyler Sayre and freshman guard Pharroh Gordon tossed in 14 and 12 respectively, while junior guard Damon Coleman had 10 points to go along with eight assists.

For Southern Connecticut State, junior guard Michael Mallory scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the second half, while senior guard Desmond Williams recorded a double-double behind 19 points and 14 rebounds. Junior forward Eric Ross added 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the floor.

Both teams shot extremely well as Saint Rose canned 50.0 percent (30-for-60) of its field goal attempts, while Southern Connecticut State buried 54.3 percent (33-for-61) of its shots. However, the Owls manufactured a 35-25 advantage on the glass and outscored the Golden Knights 32-22 in the paint.

Regardless, Saint Rose led throughout the majority of the opening 35 minutes and built a 67-58 cushion after Sayre knocked down a jumper with a 9:40 left in the ballgame. Southern Connecticut State then took off on a 12-3 jaunt that tied it 70-70 with 4:45 to go and after Saint Rose camp up empty, Mallory drained one of his four treys on the afternoon to put the Owls ahead to stay.

The Golden Knights got out to a strong start by converting eight of their first 12 shots that yielded a 17-10 lead seven minutes in. However, Southern Connecticut State called timeout and responded with a 15-6 run to go up 36-29 with 3:08 to go. Saint Rose then returned the favor as freshman guard Shane Herrity drained a 3-pointer that sparked a 13-4 spurt to afford Saint Rose a 42-40 halftime lead.

The Golden Knights boosted their edge to 14, 60-46, after Coleman nailed a trey with 12:53 remaining, but Mallory countered with one himself at the other end that cut the lead to single digits while foreshadowing how things would go down the stretch.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose has a 7:00 pm "non-league" game at Stonehill this Wednesday, December 9 in Easton, MA. The Owls have a non-league 7:00 pm meeting at Holy Family University on Monday in Philadelphia.
