SAINT ROSE STYMIES LATE COMEBACK ATTEMPT TO EDGE MOLLOY

ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose had to hold its breath as a last-second three-point attempt from Molloy bounced off the rim just before time expired Saturday, giving the Golden Knights a 59-57 victory in the opening game of the Saint Rose Holiday Classic held inside Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights (5-4) led by as many as 15 in the first half and 13 at the break, but Molloy (2-7) persevered to draw within one point with under a minute remaining in regulation.

With 19 seconds to go and trailing by one, Molloy forced a turnover and was fouled on a fast-break layup attempt. However, the Lions missed both free throws and Saint Rose gained possession, while clinging on to a one-point, 58-57 lead with 17 seconds left.

Next, junior guard Taylor Nazon was fouled and made 1-of-2 shots at the line. On the following Molloy possession, good defense forced a contested three-pointer that would have likely given the Lions the victory had it gone in.

Junior forward Staci Barrett led Saint Rose with 14 points, on 7-of-12 shooting, and seven rebounds. Freshman forward Karissa Birthwright had 10 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Keyontae Williams rounded out the Golden Knight contingent in double figures with 10 points.

Saint Rose shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the field, while Molloy shot 35.4 percent (23-of-65). Both teams struggled from the line, as the Golden Knights went 6-for-10 and the Lions were 5-for-12 including two crucial misses in the final minute.

Senior forward Ally Leftridge and senior guard Kimani Jackson scored 19 points each to lead Molloy, which will take on Franklin Pierce at 12 p.m. on Sunday. The Golden Knights play Chestnut Hill in the Saint Rose Holiday Classic finale at 2 p.m.

In today's second game, Franklin Pierce defeated Chestnut Hill, 74-49. Junior forward Alison Palma helped the Ravens earn the victory behind 17 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Natalie Bastian also tossed in 17 points. For the Griffins, freshman forward Jaeda Wildgoose had 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
