BALANCED ATTACK PROPELS GOLDEN KNIGHTS PAST AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL IN NE-10 OPENER

ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose shot 55.4 percent (31-for-56) from the floor and put five players in double-figures scoring to upend visiting American International in both squads Northeast-10 Conference opener tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.

Senior guard Max Weaver scored 14 of his game-high 16 points after halftime, junior forward Tyler Sayre tossed in 13, and junior guard Damon Coleman scored 12 to lead the Golden Knights (2-1/1-0 NE-10). Also, sophomore forwards Julian Lipinski and Sam Eckstrom added 10 apiece.

For the Yellow Jackets, senior forward Trahmier Burrell tossed in 14 points and senior guard Cameron Dobbs and senior forward Oscar Assie each scored 13.

Saint Rose buried 62.1 percent (18-for-29) of its shots and forced the Yellow Jackets into 28.1 percent (9-ror-32) shooting throughout the opening 20 minutes to take a 19 point, 46-27, lead at the break.

The Golden Knights took off on an 18-5 jaunt with 11:25 remaining that transformed a 19-13 lead into a 19 point, 37-18, cushion with 4:38 to go. Sayre finished inside and freshman guard Pharroh Gordon knocked down a trey to ignite the spurt, before capping it by finishing his own steal.

Regardless, the defending NE-10 champion Yellow Jackets did not go quietly. American International outscored Saint Rose 13-3 during a five minute span midway through the second half to get back to within 13, 66-53, with 9:05 to go. However, Eckstrom scored six consecutive points to again make it a 19 point ballgame and halt any thought of a Yellow Jackets comeback.

Looking ahead, both squads are back on the hardwood with 3:30 pm league games this Saturday. Saint Rose will visit New Haven, while the Yellow Jackets will host Adelphi.
