SAINT ROSE RALLY COMES UP SHORT IN 2015-16 DEBUT

SYRACUSE-The College of Saint Rose rallied from a 14 point deficit midway through the third period to get to within a bucket on three occasions in the fourth only to fall 83-75 to Caldwell during opening day action of the Conference Challenge that is being hosted by Le Moyne College.

Freshman forward Karissa Birthwright tossed in 19 points and hauled in seven rebounds in her collegiate debut and junior forward Staci Barrett filled the box score with 13 points, 12 points and five assists to lead the Golden Knights. Also, senior guard Taylor Nazon finished with 12 points, seven boards and four assists.

Caldwell (1-0) opened up a 24-11 lead after the first period and owned a 46-32 halftime advantage, before Saint Rose (0-1) took off on a 19-6 charge that whittled a 14 point, 48-34, deficit to one, 54-53, with 2:42 to go after Nazon knocked down a 3-pointer.

The Saint Rose deficit swayed between two and six points throughout the fourth period, before Birthwright finished one of seven assists from sophomore guard Britani Stowe that again made it a two point ballgame, 73-71, with 3:18 remaining.

However, sophomore guard Sharell Sanders buried a trey and after the Golden Knights came up empty, senior guard Nicole Angelo finished inside to put the Cougars ahead by seven, 78-71, with 2:30 to go. Caldwell, which put five players in twin figures scoring, then made five of its eight free throws down the stretch to seal the outcome.

Looking ahead, the tournament concludes tomorrow with the Golden Knights facing Georgian Court at 1:00 pm.
