SAINT ROSE RUNS PAST BLOOMFIELD IN SEASON OPENER


ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose put ten players in the scoring column and rallied from a nine point deficit midway through the first half to upend visiting Bloomfield 92-79 during first day action of the Northeast-10 Challenge that is being presented by Hilton Garden Inn-Albany Medical Center.
 
Junior forward Tyler Sayre tossed in 31 points and hauled in nine rebounds to pace the Golden Knights (1-0). Also, sophomore center Sam Eckstrom contributed 14 points, five rebounds and three assists throughout 14 minutes of reserve duty.
 
Senior guard Max Weaver handed out a career eight assists and junior guard Damon Coleman added eight points, five assists and a pair of steals in his Saint Rose debut.
 
Sophomore forward Nick Davidson finished with 25 points for the Bears (0-1).
 
The Golden Knights used an 18-2 jaunt midway through the first half that transformed a 30-21 deficit into a 39-32 lead with 1:55 to go until intermission. Freshman guard Shane Herrity knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key to ignite the charge and Eckstrom drilled a jumper to cap it.
 
The Deacons (0-1) hung in and were within three, 65-62, with 10:53 to go when Sayre knocked down a jumper and finished a fast break off a Coleman steal to spark an 11-4 spurt that yielded a 76-66 Saint Rose cushion. The Golden Knights subsequently led by double digits the rest of the way.
 
In tonight's first game, East Stroudsburg forced Le Moyne into 21 turnovers and outrebounded the Dolphins 18-7 on the offensive glass en route to an 85-62 victory. Senior guard Jamal Nwaniemeka led four Warriors in twin-figures with 18 points.
 
Looking ahead, the tournament concludes tomorrow with Saint Rose facing East Stroudsburg at 5:00 pm. Le Moyne and Bloomfield will tip-off at 3:00 pm.
