GOLDEN KNIGHTS DROP HEARTBREAKER

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose got out to a great start only to drop tonight's heartbreaking 3-2 (25-13, 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-17) decision to visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Anselm.

The match will certainly have postseason implications as only one loss separates fifth from ninth place with the league schedule wrapping up tomorrow. The top-eight will garner a berth to the NE-10 Championship. Saint Rose is currently locked in a three-way tie for fifth with Southern New Hampshire and American International.

The Golden Knights (11-11/7-6 NE-10) forced a fifth set after falling behind 2-1 in the match and subsequently rallied from a 13-7 deficit to tie it at the 14th and 15th points, before taking a 15-14 lead. However, a service error followed by back-to-back kills from Saint Anselm sophomore outside Katy Teets allowed the Hawks (9-14/5-8 NE-10) to hang on for the victory.

Each squad hurt itself with 16 service errors apiece although Saint Anselm manufactured nine aces as opposed to six by Saint Rose.

Junior middle hitter Maryellen Devic had 13 kills and six digs, while senior right side hitter Carissa Dube and junior middle hitter Jennifer Gundrum put away 10 kills each for the Golden Knights. The former was also a force at the net with five blocks.

Junior libero Samantha Atchinson tied for match-high honors with 16 digs out of the back while freshman setter Sam Kubik and junior setter Erica Ziskin both recorded double-doubles by combining for 44 assists and 20 digs.

Meanwhile, Teets wound up with 13 kills and eight digs for Saint Anselm.

Looking ahead, both teams are back in action tomorrow. Saint Rose will host Saint Michael's at 1:00 pm for Senior Day. The Hawks will head west on the thruway to face Le Moyne at 11:00 am in Syracuse.
