SAINT ROSE FALLS IN FIVE TIGHT SETS AT NE-10 RIVAL FRANKLIN PIERCE

RINDGE, NH–Host Franklin Pierce won the final two sets to squeak past The College of Saint Rose 3-2 (29-31, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20, 15-11) in tonight's Northeast-10 Conference match that was decided by a mere eight points. The two squads combined for a staggering 121 kills and 185 digs throughout the two hour and nine minute affair.

Junior middle hitter Maryellen Devic recorded 16 kills while junior outside hitter Rachel Salasky and junior right side hitter Jennifer Gundrum put away 14 and 11 respectively to spearhead the Golden Knights offense. Gundrum was extremely efficient with only two errors throughout 18 swings. She also came up with four blocks.

Defensively, junior libero Samantha Atchinson recorded a match-high 27 digs while the setting tandem of freshman Sam Kubik and junior Erica Ziskin doled out 27 and 19 assists respectively.

Saint Rose (7-10/3-5 NE-10) outlasted the Ravens in the opening set to afford itself an early match lead. The game featured 14 ties before back-to-back kills by senior right side hitter Carissa Dube and Salasky brought it to a close. The Golden Knights then went up 2-1 by accounting for five of the final third set points.

However, Franklin Pierce (12-6/6-1 NE-10) jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the fourth to set the stage for the winner-take-all finale. Saint Rose rallied from an 8-1 deficit to deadlock it 9-9, but could not get over the final hurdle as the Ravens scored six of the final eight points to improve to 4-0 at home this fall.

Freshman outside hitter Katie Leidhold filled the box score to propel the Ravens. Leidhold recorded 27 kills, with a mere eight errors in 63 attempts, to go along with four aces, 23 digs and three blocks.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights return to action tomorrow with a 1:00 pm match at conference rival Southern New Hampshire in Manchester. Meanwhile, Franklin Pierce has a 1:00 pm home NE-10 date with Le Moyne.
