SAINT ROSE GRABS KEY NE-10 MATCH FROM AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose shut out its fourth opponent of the year en route to tonight's key 3-0 victory against visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival American International.

The two teams came into tonight looking to remain in the hunt for a conference championship berth with the Golden Knights (6-6-1/5-4-1 NE-10) standing in the eighth and final spot, and the Yellow Jackets (4-6-4/2-4-4 NE-10) tied with Assumption for ninth place.

However, Saint Rose took care of business by scoring midway through each period before an own goal in the 80th minute left little doubt about the eventual outcome.

Freshman forward Ryan Rooney and sophomore back Nathan Brown accounted for the two Golden Knights strikes, while senior keeper Colan Balkwell recorded all three of his saves throughout the opening 39 minutes of the second half to keep American International in check.

The two teams exchanged possessions throughout the midfield in the early going as the game's first shot wasn't recorded until the 22nd minute. Saint Rose then engineered four threats within a three minute span. Sophomore forward Romaine Williamson and junior midfielder Nick Menozzi delivered the two most dangerous shots that sailed just high and wide respectively.

Rooney then stripped an American International defender off the ball, dribbled up the left end line and lifted a shot from 10-yards out over junior keeper Sebastian Tamayo who was forced into desperation mode.

In the second half, senior midfielder Massimo Smiroldo sent in a volley from the left midfield that Brown got in the air to head inside the right post with 61:50 expired. Ten minutes later, a Golden Knights set piece ricocheted off a Yellow Jacket defender to provide the final margin.

Both sides are back in action Saturday. Saint Rose has a 7:00 pm meeting at Franklin Pierce in Rindge, NH, while the Yellow Jackets have a 6:00 pm home date with Le Moyne.
