SAINT ROSE DROPS TWO AT DOWLING TOURNAMENT

ROCKVILLE CENTER, NY–Despite a five-set battle with NYIT, The College of Saint Rose dropped a pair of matches at the Dowling Tournament Saturday afternoon, falling 3-2 (26-24, 20-25, 14-25, 25-15, 12-15) to the Bears, and 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 13-25, 17-25) to the host Golden Lions.
 
Against Dowling (4-0), sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Gundrum and junior outside hitter Kelsey Lace led the attack with eight kills apiece. Senior setters Tori Daniels and Ariana Wilson each dished out 14 assists and 10 digs for a pair of double-doubles. Senior libero Katy Daniels recorded 23 digs, while freshman middle hitter Maddy Halverson and sophomore middle hitter Maryellen Devic put up five six blocks each.
 
In set one, the Golden Bears strung together multiple runs and kept Saint Rose at a distance as they took the game with ease. Down 16-11, the Golden Knights took a timeout, and slowly battled back to come within one at 21-20. Dowling knocked down a kill, and Dube committed an attack error to give them a large enough lead to push on to the 25-23 win.
 
Game two started with five ties before the Golden Knights used a five-point run to jump out to a 15-10 lead. The Golden Lions slowly tacked on points to bring another tie at 18-18, and the set would tie at every point until 24-24 when Dube and Gundrum smacked two-straight kills for the 26-24 victory.
 
In set three, Dowling moved fast to take an 11-7 lead and force a Saint Rose timeout, but the Golden Knights were unable to catch up, and called another timeout at 17-10. Dowling kept pushing and allowed Saint Rose to pick up just three more points en route to the 25-13 advantage.
 
Set four held a similar script as its predecessor as Dowling kept its momentum going with a 17-12 lead as Saint Rose called its first timeout of the set. The Golden Knights were able to put five more notches on the board, but it would not be enough as Dowling claiming the 25-18 win.
 
Against NYIT, Lace picked up her first double-double of the season against the Bears as she paced the attack with 13 kills, and recorded 11 digs and three service aces. Dube notched 10 kills to sit just behind.
 
Katy Daniels dug up 27 Bear attacks, while Tori Daniels dished out 19 assists. Devic held strong in the middle as she put up five blocks on the match.
 
Set one was neck-and-neck as the teams saw 11 ties, including the final at 24-24, until Dube knocked down a kill and Katy Daniels slapped an ace to claim the game.
 
In the second, the Bears put a five-point run together to jump out to a quick 9-2 lead. The Golden Knights battled throughout the set, but remained at an arm's length until the 25-20 final heading into the break.
 
Three ties took place to start set three before NYIT took a 6-3 lead. The Bears followed with a six-point run to put up a commanding 16-7 advantage. Saint Rose did not come any closer than three-points throughout the remainder of the game, and secured just seven more points in the set as NYIT claimed a 25-14 victory.
 
In the fourth, the Bears jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the Golden Knights battled back to tie the game at four, six and eight-all, and kept going with a four-point run to take the lead at 12-8. They kept their lead steady, and used a three and four-point run to end the game at 25-15 and force set five.
 
Tied 2-2 to start the fifth, the Bears used a four-point run to build a 6-2 lead. NYIT slowly chipped away at the board, and held the Golden Knights from coming within more than three points throughout the rest of the game to claim the eventually 15-12 final.
 
Saint Rose returns to the floor and opens its home slate on Saturday, September 13 in a tri-match with Pitt-Johnstown and Roberts Wesleyan at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights kick things off at 11:00 am with the Mountain Cats and then face the Redhawks at 5:00 pm.
