ALBANY, NY-Dougle-digit figures from three different members of The College of Saint Rose volleyball team gave the Golden Knights momentum to shut out Southern Connecticut State 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-16) Tuesday evening in a Northeast-10 Conference match at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The win marks the first league victory of the season for Saint Rose (8-4/1-1 NE-10).
Despite Southern Connecticut (4-10/1-2 NE-10) jumping out a 7-0 lead early in the first set, Saint Rose used a seven-point run of its own to tie the game, and two points to every one of SCSU's throughout the remainder of the set for a 25-20 win.
In the second, the Golden Knights built a slow lead, allowing the Owls to come within one point at the 5-4 mark, until they took off on a five-point tear to take a 10-4 lead. A Seven-point spurt followed shortly after to give Saint Rose what came to be its biggest lead of the game at 18-6. The Golden Knights gave up just six more points to the Owls as they went on to win 25-12.
The third set began similar to its predecessor, with the Owls coming as close as 5-4, followed by multiple notches on the board from the Golden Knights, allowing them to take a 15-12 lead. Saint Rose tacked on a six-point run a short time after for a 21-14 advantage, and followed with a pair of three-point runs to finish out to the game at 25-16.
Sophomore Maryellen Devic led the attack for the eighth-straight match with 15 kills on the evening. Junior outside hitter Kelsey Lace added eight kills. Senior setter Tori Daniels dished out 21 assists and slapped a season-high three service aces, while her sister and fellow senior libero Katy Daniels dug up 12 Owls attacks.
The Golden Knights return to their home floor on Friday for a 7:00 pm meeting with league member Assumption. Fans are asked to wear black in honor of the athletic department's Black Friday campaign. Saint Rose will hit the road on Sunday for a noon match at American International, and follow with an Upstate Challenge match verses Le Moyne on Tuesday at 7:00 pm in Albany.
