ALBANY, N.Y. – Junior outside hitter Kelsey Lace and sophomore middle hitter Maryellen Devic combined for 21 kills to allow The College of Saint Rose volleyball team to capture a 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19) win over Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption Friday night at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
The win keeps the Golden Knights undefeated at home this season as they improve to 9-4 overall, and 2-1 in the NE-10. The Greyhounds fall to 3-8, and 1-3, respectively.
Saint Rose got to work early in the first set and took a quick 3-0 lead. The Greyhounds put a couple dents in the board, but gave up seven points in a row for the Golden Knights to take a 13-3 lead. Assumption followed with two, three-point spurts in an attempt to bridge the gap, but Saint Rose made its own three-point run for an 18-9 margin. Both teams took turns adding to the board throughout the remainder of the set until Saint Rose used a three-point gain to end the game at 25-15.
Set two started off similar to the first as the Golden Knights jumped out to an 8-4 lead, and then followed with a five-point run to lead 13-5. The Greyhounds added three more points to come within seven, but Saint Rose put up a four-point run, and a three-point spurt for a 20-13 lead. Neither team could put a run together through the rest of the set, but Saint Rose took advantage of a pair of service errors and a pair of aces to come away with the 25-19 win.
Assumption was able to gain a little bit of ground in set three as it started off with a 4-0 lead. Saint Rose chipped away at the board and was able to tie the game at 7-7 and take the lead, but the Greyhounds bounced back with a three-point run. Saint rose battled back once again and tied the game at 11-all, but it would be the final tie of the set as Assumption slowly ran away with the lead. Leading 19-17 late in the game, the Greyhounds put five points together to take an eventual 25-19 win.
The Golden Knights used the loss in the third as fuel and came out firing in the fourth. They started off with a 5-1 lead, and slowly added on from there. Three, three-point runs, and a 4-0 spurt gave Saint Rose a 19-13 advantage, and enough momentum to carry out the win. The Greyhounds put three more on the board in comparison to four for the Golden Knights, and managed a three-point run, but it would not be enough as Saint Rose nabbed the 25-19 victory.
Devic paced the Golden Knights attack for the 11th time this season as she registered 12 kills on the evening and registered a career-high five aces, followed by Lace with 10 kills. Senior Tori Daniels and sophomore Erica Ziskin dished out 36 assists total, and senior libero Katy Daniels dug up 26 Greyhound attacks. Freshman middle hitter Maddy Halverson accounted for two of the team's four total blocks throughout the game as she put up one solo and a pair of assists.
The Golden Knights hit the road for a league match at American International on Sunday at noon, and return to Albany on Tuesday for a 7:00 pm meeting with Le Moyne in an Upstate Challenge match.
