GOLDEN KNIGHTS FALL IN BACK-AND-FORTH BATTLE WITH PANTHERS

GARDEN CITY, N.Y.–A career-high 25 kills and a double-double from sophomore middle hitter Maryellen Devic allowed The College of Saint Rose to put up a strong effort in a Northeast-10 Conference match with Adelphi, but it would not be enough as the Panthers secured the come-from-behind 3-2 (28-26, 17-25, 26-24, 21-25, 10-15) win Saturday afternoon at the Center for Recreation and Sport.

Set one was very competitive as it displayed 14 ties and came down to the wire. Saint Rose (7-4/0-1 NE-10) was able to build up a 17-13 lead after the 11-11 tie, but the Panthers (4-9/2-0 NE-10) battled back with a three-point run to bring the game to 18-all. Ties were seen at nearly every point from there on out, the final coming at 26-26. An attack error from Adelphi and a huge kill from junior right side hitter Carissa Dube secured the 28-26 win for the Golden Knights.

The Panthers evened the match in set two as they jumped out to a large 10-2 lead, and continued their run from there. Adelphi followed with a pair of four-point spurts to move to a 19-6 advantage and only allowed Saint Rose to tack on 11 more points until the 25-17 final.

The Golden Knights came out firing in the third, and used two three-point runs to put the Panthers at a 19-13 distance. Both teams continued to chip away at the board, and the Panthers tacked on five in a row late in the game to even the score at 24-24, forcing a Saint Rose timeout. The Golden Knights returned the court with a kill from sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Gundrum and a service ace from senior setter Tori Daniels to claim the 26-24 win.

Set four started out similar to the first with seven ties before 11-11. Neither team could put a run together until late in the game when the Panthers collected five in a row for a 23-17 advantage. The Golden Knights mustered four more points throughout the set, but they would not be enough as the Panthers came away with the 25-21 win, and forced a fifth set.

Adelphi carried its momentum into the fifth as they jumped out to a 10-6 lead. Both teams tacked on three more points apiece before Saint Rose called a timeout. An ace from the Panthers and an attack error from Dube gave Adelphi the 15-10 win, and the overall victory.

Devic paced the Saint Rose attack with a .333 hitting percentage, followed by Dube with 10 kills. Daniels (Tori) dished out a season-high 26 assists, followed by sophomore defensive specialist Erica Ziskin with 20. Senior libero Katy Daniels dug up 23 Panther attacks to lead to defense, and Gundrum, Devic and freshman middle hitter Maddy Halverson put up three blocks each at the net.

The Golden Knights host a pair of conference home matches in the coming week, starting with Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday at 7:00 pm, and again with Assumption on Friday, also at 7:00 pm, at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. Friday's match will be broadcast live on www.gogoldenknights.tv
