TOP-RANKED SAINT ROSE AND #9 ADELPHI PLAY TO SCORELESS TIE

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose and Adelphi played to a 0-0 (2OT) draw tonight in a key Northeast-10 Conference match-up featuring two of the nation's top-10 NCAA Division II teams according to this week's NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll. The game was also a rematch of last year's NE-10 Championship Final that the top-ranked Golden Knights (6-0-1/2-0-1 NE-10) won 2-0.

The contest was fairly evenly played although Saint Rose dictated the pace throughout the final 20 minutes of regulation. Both squads also had superlative opportunities to score in overtime. The Golden Knights manufactured a 15-10 shot advantage, including a 12-7 differential after halftime, and owned a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore keeper Ashley Homer recorded a season-high four saves for Saint Rose, while senior Sam Whitney, the 2013 NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Year, made six of her eight stops following intermission for the ninth-ranked Panthers (5-0-1/2-0-1 NE-10).

The Golden Knights almost came away with their second overtime victory of the season in the waning moments when junior back Silvana Giovannone deflected a volley off the crossbar with five seconds showing on the clock.

Meanwhile, Homer was at her best midway through the first extra session when she dove to her right to deny junior midfielder Melissa Rubin who let go a shot from just the inside the six-yard box.

Saint Rose had arguably the best opportunity in regulation when senior forward Carmelina Puopolo dribbled down the left flank, created space, and let go a shot that forced Whitney to be on her toes. Two minutes later, junior midfielder Gianna Smith delivered a nice cross from the left sideline that freshman forward Morgan Burchhardt headed over the crossbar.

Going forward, both teams have conference road matches this Saturday, September 27. Saint Rose will head to Rindge, NH to take on Franklin Pierce at 1:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Panthers travel to Colchester, VT for an 11:00 am meeting at Saint Michael's.
