SAINT ROSE SPLITS ON FINAL DAY OF AIC INVITATIONAL

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
SPRINGFIELD, MA–The College of Saint Rose split a pair of games on the final day of the American International Invitational Saturday afternoon, defeating Nyack 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-15) and later falling to New Haven 3-0 (12-25, 17-25, 26-28) at Butova Gymnasium.

In set one with the Chargers, UNH (5-2) seemed relentless as it jumped out to a 9-2 lead, and tacked on five in a row to put Saint Rose (6-3) at an arm's length. Another four-point spurt increased their lead to 20-5. The Golden Knights managed seven more points throughout the set, but they would not be enough as New Haven ran away with the 25-12 win.

Set two began similar to its predecessor as the Chargers held a large lead. Both teams chipped away at the board, but New Haven used a four-point run late in the set to jump out to 21-14. Another three in a row would seal the victory as Saint Rose was unable to hold on.

The Golden Knights put up a fight in the third as the script held 10 ties throughout its entirety. New Haven maintained a lead in the beginning, but Saint Rose caught up to tie the score at 13-13, and keep the game neck-and-neck from there on out. The final tie came at 26-26, followed by a pair of kills from the Chargers as they claimed the overall win.

Against the Warriors (5-4), the Golden Knights trailed early in the first set 6-3, but bounced back after a pair of timeouts and staggering points, with a four-point run to tie the game at 9-9. Both squads battled for the lead as the score tied three more times after that until Saint Rose picked up six in a row, and followed with another run, this time at five, for a 24-15 lead. A service error from Nyack ended the set and gave Saint Rose the 25-16 win.

The Golden Knights did not waste any time in set two as they jumped out to a 13-6 lead. They followed with a three and four-point run, and a few points in between to take a 25-17 victory and a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

The third and final set got off to a back-and-forth start, but in favor of the Golden Knights. Leading 12-7, Nyack picked up four points in a row to bridge the gap to 12-11, but it would not be enough as Saint Rose chipped away at the board and took a 16-12 lead. The Golden Knights then took a commanding 24-13 lead with an eight-point spurt, and eventually came away with the 25-14 win.

Once again, sophomore middle hitter Maryellen Devic led the Saint Rose offense with 17 kills. Sophomore setter Erica Ziskin and senior setter Tori Daniels dished out 19 and 26 assists apiece. Senior libero Katy Daniels dug up 31 attacks, and freshman middle hitter Maddy Halverson led from the middle with eight blocks on the day. The Golden Knights held the Warriors to a slim .056 attack percentage, and gave up a .177 mark to the Chargers.

Saint Rose remains on the road next weekend with matches at LIU Post and their Northeast-10 Conference opener at Adelphi on Long Island, before returning home to face Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday, September 30 at 7:00 pm in Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
