GOLDEN KNIGHTS BLANK FRANKLIN PIERCE AND WILMINGTON

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.–A combined 60 digs from senior libero Katy Daniels and 34 kills from sophomore middle hitter Maryellen Devic allowed The College of Saint Rose to pick up a pair of 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-14) (25-19, 25-21, 25-16) wins versus Franklin Pierce and Wilmington (De.), respectively, Friday evening at the American International Invitational. In the process, the Golden Knights (5-2) collected their fourth win a row.

Against Wilmington (3-9), Saint Rose got ahead early, leading 16-12 in set one before the Wildcats picked up five points in a row to tie the game at 17-17. The Golden Knights climbed back on top with three tallies straight, and held Wilmington off for the 25-19 final.

With six ties to start set two, neither squad was able to pull away until late in the game when the Golden Knights strung together four points for a 23-17 lead. The Wildcats went on a three-point run to bridge the gap and post a 23-20 score, forcing head coach Brian Goodale to take a timeout. Kills from junior right side Carissa Dube and sophomore middle hitter Jennifer Gundrum followed the pep talk and sealed the win.

After a final tie at 10-10 in set three, Saint Rose chipped away at the board with pairs of points to every one for Wilmington until the 25-16 victory.

Set one against Franklin Pierce (2-6) started off with a back-and-forth script as both teams took turns chipping away at the board. The final of five ties came at 14-14, followed by a four-point run from the Golden Knights, and another three-point spurt shortly after for a 22-18 lead. The Ravens came within one at 23-22, but they dished out a service and attack error in order for Saint Rose to claim the game.

Set two began similar to its predecessor, as five ties would hold both teams together until the last at 10-all. Saint Rose then tacked on four in a row, followed by five more for a 19-11 lead. Franklin Pierce would pick up just four more points throughout the game as the Golden Knights ran away with the 25-15 win.

In the third, the Ravens mustered just 14 points as the Golden Knights went on a tear that included multiple runs, the largest at six in a row, followed by four more to Franklin Pierce at an arm's length. A three-point run closed out the match at 25-14.

Devic led the attack for the night and recorded her second double-double of the season with 19 kills and 24 digs against the Wildcats, followed by junior outside hitter Kelsey Lace with 16 kills total. Senior setter Tori Daniels dished out 20 assists and dug up 10 attacks against the Ravens for her first double-double of the 2014 campaign, and came up just short of another against Wilmington with 15 assists and nine digs. Daniels (Katy) paced the defense, while freshman middle hitter Maddy Halverson put up five blocks.

Saint Rose continues play at AIC on Saturday and will face NYACK and New Haven at 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm to close out the weekend. The Golden Knights remain on the road next weekend with matches at LIU Post and their Northeast-10 Conference opener at Adelphi, before returning home to face Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday, September 30 at 7:00 pm in the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
